Practical experience of opera during the year is hugely augmented by the programme’s association with the Royal Opera House, which provides opportunities to see productions in rehearsal and performance, and to meet and network with key resident and visiting practitioners. The programme collaborates closely with Guildhall’s award-winning Opera Department, led by Dominic Wheeler, with Guildhall opera singers forming the cast for the chamber operas created by composer-writer teams. Led by Julian Philips, Head of Composition, Stephen Plaice, Writer-in-Residence, and Laura Bowler, composition professor, teaching is enriched through regular seminars with visiting professionals from the opera world including conductors and directors, singers and instrumentalists, designers and stage managers. Students also take part in one-to-one tutorials, production seminars and creative development workshops. The programme focuses on the collaborative nature of opera making, and each composerwriter team is supported by collaborative mentoring. Two smaller projects allow you to follow your own creative pathway: in poetry, prose, dramatic or film script (writers), and in vocal or instrumental/ electronic works (composers). J oshua Burnell’s musical soul lies somewhere between 18th-century broadside ballads and 1970s glam rock. Each team develops a short opera scene, before going on to create full chamber operas. During an initial induction module, students pair up into composer-writer teams. The programme admits three composers and three writers each year. Part of an exciting partnership between Guildhall School and the Royal Opera House, the programme centres around the creation of a 25-minute chamber opera which is fully staged in Milton Court Studio Theatre. In practice there are three main strands to their work 1. Their objective is not only to educate children about opera by presenting it as something fun and exciting in all its various forms but importantly also to encourage confidence in each child. Their passion to inspire the next generation drives the school program and to date they have worked with over 300 schools and more than 25,000 children. ![]() Their main aim has always been to awaken a new generation to the meaning and joy of opera by educating young enthralling the old and encouraging participation for all. Over the years the company have performed everywhere from school halls to churches, historic houses, private clubs and Italian Piazzas. Most of Opera Brava's performances have been outside braving a sometimes unforgiving English heatwave in full costume or singing love duets as the rain falls horizontally across the stage.
